Initially, these wrinkles will only be seen when the muscles contract during smiling or frowning, and are referred to as dynamic wrinkles. Dermal fillers are injected below the skin’s surface to ‘plump up’ static facial lines and folds, creating a natural and refreshed facial expression.
What are dermal fillers?
Dermal fillers are a non-surgical treatment primarily used to shape and proportion the face, making them a very powerful tool in facial rejuvenation and enhancement. The most common dermal fillers are made of a substance (collagen/hyaluronic acid/ Calcium Hydroxylapatite) which is naturally found in the skin.
Common areas treated by dermal filler
Dermal fillers are used to revolumise the face. The lost volume may cause folds, wrinkle, flattening or shriveling of an area. Facial volume loss is one of the key factors in the aging process, and dermal fillers can help to replenish this lost volume and rejuvenate the face. Importantly, dermal fillers can be used for these areas, including;
- lip enhancement to restore full and sensuous lips
- cheek enhancement
- disguising eye bags/filling tear troughs
- nose reshaping
- chin enhancement
- brow shaping/lifting
- non-surgical facelift
- non-surgical jowl reduction
- forehead contour and line smoothing
- Frown line smoothing
- Smile line removal
Benefits of gel injection
- A non-invasive treatment with little downtime, so you can return to day to day activities straight away
- Reduction of lines and wrinkles to give a more youthful looking appearance
- Replenishes lost volume for a softer more younger look
- Long lasting results
Gel injection procedure at cosmetic clinic
At Cosmetic Clinic, we use temporary fillers lasting from 4 to 24 months, and some are composed of substances that are naturally found in the skin. Our expert specialists have a wide palette of dermal fillers to choose from. Finer lines are usually harder to fill with dermal fillers and require finer fillers. Skin resurfacing with lasers is a good option for the reduction of fine lines as it is a more permanent option but requires some recovery time.
Before the gel injection procedure
During a consultation with one of our medical staff, we will discuss and advise you on the best filler and treatment areas for you, after a careful aesthetic assessment. We will outline for you the number of fillers required, the price, the side effects, and the after-care required.
During the gel injection procedure
The face is firstly cleaned with anaestheticsolution. The local anaesthetic may also be used in the skin to numb specific areas where the filler is to be injected. We often use ice to help numb the skin prior to any injections. Fillers can be injected with either a needle or a cannula, and the following video describes the key differences here Depending on the area being treated and the dermal filler used, most treatments can be performed over a ½ to 1-hour appointment. Sometimes we will ask you to come in earlier for application of a topical anaesthetic cream.
After gel injection
Treatment with dermal fillers sometimes does take more than one session to get the best results. The first treatment lays the foundation for the subsequent treatments, and future treatments allow for any adjustments to be made. There is usually some transient redness after the injections. Swelling is also present after the procedure, especially with any lip enhancement procedure. Swelling of other areas post-treatment tends to temporarily enhance the effect of the dermal filler, and it often takes 3 or more days to see the actual real improvement without swelling. Conversely, hyaluronic acid fillers often take up to a week to ‘hydrate’. They are very hydrophilic, which means they are attracted to water. Final results from fillers, therefore, take about a week or more, which is the time it takes for any swelling to subside and the dermal filler to hydrate.
Gel injection costs
Since each person’s needs vary and because there are several different types of dermal fillers, the cost will depend on the type of treatment you and the doctor decide is best for you. At consultation appointment with our specialist, we’ll be able to give you a better idea of pricing.
Gel injection side effects
Bruising can also occur, and if it does, it can take normally take a week or two to completely disappear. Make-up/lipstick can be worn (if applicable) soon after treatment. To avoid bruising, we generally use blunt-tip cannulas rather than sharp needles to avoid puncturing blood vessels. Generally, dermal filler treatment is very safe, non-surgical treatment for revolumising and shaping the face. They have been used safely for cosmetic reasons for over 20 years.
Are dermal fillers safe?
When done by expert board-certified dermatologists, fillers are not only safe but effective
Is gel injection painful?
Often there is mild discomfort associated with the treatment, but it is well tolerated by most patients.
How many treatments do I need?
Treatment times vary depending on the number of fillers required and the areas treated, but generally take from 30 to 60 minutes. After treatment, it is possible to apply make-up if applicable and to go about your normal activities. We usually ask you to refrain from heavy exercise, however.
